An Anatomical Approach to Expressive Portraiture
This 4 day portrait workshop will help you understand the specific structures and musculature of the face that affect expression in order to be able to introduce more psychology into your portraiture. Working with a live model we will be aiming to achieve on one side of the clay portrait an accurate likeness employing traditional academic portrait techniques. The other side of the portrait will be an exploration of the anatomical features of the model, known as an écorché (ie without the skin surface added). On this écorché side the skull will remain visible and the muscles creating specific expressions will be analysed and their forms explored. The result is a deeper study of the art of portraiture and will be a useful reference tool for future portrait sculptures.
