Sculpting the Hand Workshop with Eirik Arnesen

  • 91 Chasséstraat Amsterdam, NH, 1057 JB Netherlands (map)

Instructor: Eirik Arnesen
Dates: 02 - 06 April 2025
Cost: 900 euro
Location: Chasséstraat 91, 1057 JB Amsterdam

Description

The aim of this course is to introduce you to a methodology that enables you to independently sculpt an accurate and convincing three dimensional hand from a cast. You will receive individual critiques throughout the workshop. Observation is central to these discussions: what does your eye see and how do you translate into clay what you think you see?

Program

After considering the basics of a sensible hand armature, we begin with a short introduction to the 'Drawing in space' teaching method, discuss anatomical and proportional canons, working 'from the inside out' and analyzing depth to understand how contours move in space. We will talk about the basic planes in hands, as well as significant anatomical points in the hand. As forms gradually develop from the inside out, we will discuss options for modeling surface forms and finally consider what makes a hand sculpture “come to life”.
